We've Got Issues - Fashion

On June 26thrbcstudents discussed one of the many issues that we face growing up in our culture: fashion. Despite typical stereotypes, fashion is something that both guys and girls struggle with when it comes to fitting in and making it honorable before the Lord. Here are some of the points we discussed:

For most girls

1) Wearing brand names is important because it convey the image of popularity.

2) Some clothes can make you feel—skinny, pretty, popular, rich, etc.

3) Dressing in particular ways can help you get attention from boys or other people.

For most guys

1) In sports, if you don’t have the brand name or elite apparel, then you don’t feel like you can compete at the same level as other guys.

2) Price can create problems; you like the brand names, but can’t afford them.

3) Girls’ fashion can at times negatively affect guys and their thoughts.

At the heart of fashion is the same issue as every other issue we’ve discussed. That is, how do we honor the Lord with this particular aspect of our lives? And, why does this particular issue draw us away from Him at times?

With fashion the important things to ask when considering what to wear or how we should look are:

-Does what I am wearing make God happy?

-Am I trying to tempt the other gender by what I’m wearing?

-Am I negatively influencing those who look up to me with my choice of fashion?

We should remember that our bodies are temples of the HolySpirit, that we are bought with a price, and as such, we should honor God with our bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Ultimately, wanting to be fashionable is not wrong, but it depends on WHY you want to wear that dress or shirt or those shoes…and if YOU believe that what you’re wearing is pleasing or displeasing to God.
